“Why FACS?” 4 Puzzle Print and Digital Escape Room – A Fun, FREE Back-to-School Activity

Why FACS?

When I switched from 8th grade English to Family and Consumer Science, I realized how most back to school activities are either generic or the information gathered is specific to core subjects.

Another thing I noticed after my first year in FACS is how many students {or parents} have many misconceptions about Family and Consumer Science courses.

  • “My mom said I am not learning to be a housewife”
  • “Boys don’t need to learn to cook”
  • “My parents said they will teach me everything I need instead of this class”
  • “I do not need to learn how to sew because I’ll never use it”
  • “No offense, but I did not take this class for the interior design unit”
  • “I don’t need to learn financial literacy if I’m in the NBA/NFL/MLB”

A Back-to-School FACS Activity

That’s where the “Why FACS” Print and Digital Escape Room came into play.

I knew my class provided value, but now my students can learn about it in a fun way.

"Why FACS?"

I am fairly certain if I hear these things in my classroom, then you likely are hearing the same thing.

Enter the “Why FACS?” Print and Digital Escape Room! I wanted a relatively quick and easy, yet engaging way for students to learn a little bit more about Family and Consumer Science. This print and digital escape room shares some information with students without me “nagging” about the importance of my course.

I love a good escape room with the options for print and digital, especially if I plan to implement it during the first week of school. Occasionally our tech staff is above and beyond getting new Chromebooks issued to new students, but just in case this year is delayed, I have the option to print the puzzles.

Does your district have a similar experience during the first week or two?

The Print and Digital Escape Room Details

If you think this escape room might be a perfect fit for your Family and Consumer Science classroom, you can download it for FREE right here

You will need a Google Drive account to access the digital portion. If you are using is digitally in your classroom, it is also self-checking. Can I get a woo-hoo?!

You can also print the puzzles for your students and complete it the “old-fashioned” way, as I love to tell my students. You will have to check their work the “old-fashioned” way as well though.

Either way, the downloaded PDF will provide you the link you need to get started and the puzzles to print, along with the answer key.

You can grab the FREE digital and print escape room here

Need More Back-to-School FCS Activities?

What else will I do for the first day and week? Read about it here. This blog post explains 4 things I incorporate into my first week. These activities are fun, engaging, and FACS specific so your neighbor down the hall isn’t using the same activities…unless your neighbor down the hall also teaches FACS.

I always make sure to spend more time on the front end building relationships and team-building activities. I think it pays off in the long run, even if it’s only a semester course.

Our course teaches life skills and learning to speak to strangers and work with others are two important skills for our students’ future.

You can find the resources for back to school over on my TPT store.

Happy back to school season! I hope you and your students enjoy the escape room. Don’t forget you can access it for free here.
